Community Market Farms

Fitzgerald and Union Plaza Parks
Cultivated Since: 2010
Owner:  City of Oakland Parks and Recreation
City Slicker Farms has constructed a new market farm at the City of Oakland Fitzgerald and Union Plaza Parks. Our partnership with the City of Oakland Office of Parks and Recreation represents the first community market farm to be developed on Oakland parkland. This will be used as a model to explore how best to use parkland to grow produce for the community, specifically for those who have the least access to fresh fruits and vegetables. This is also home to our weekly Farm Stand where we distribute locally grown produce to West Oakland community members at sliding scale prices.   The Saturday market day is an event teeming with neighbors catching up with each other as they make their purchases and volunteers getting their hands dirty planting crops and feeding the chickens.

Herb Farm
Cultivated Since: 2008
Owner:  Beth Fein
The Herb Farm is located at the intersection of West Oakland and Emeryville.  It has been used for years to engage children and youth in the art of gardening and is now the home of our culinary herb garden.    The site comes with a playground for children to use.  Because the site is not hooked up to a water meter (we receive water from a neighbor), we are utilizing water drums and hand watering.

Secret Garden
Cultivated Since: 2007
Owner: Janet McFarland
This backyard community farm at the home of a local architect is located right above the underground Temescal Creek.   This is our second largest farm and produces an abundance of organic vegetables for the City Slicker Farms Farm Stand. A large bulk of the space is used for compost production, native plants and storage.
