Imagine the sound of children laughing in an orchard deep in the heart of West Oakland. Families gather together to share a meal on a great lawn. Kids yell with glee as they spot an egg in the chicken coop. Neighbors relax and catch up on a comfortable bench in a shady spot. Friends tend lush greens and crisp carrots together in the community garden, while West Oakland high school students harvest a bumper crop of rainbow chard between trellises heavy with scarlet runner beans.
This is the vision of a new Farm and Park for West Oakland.
Why a new Farm Park for West Oakland?
In our 14 years, we have grown 219,000 pounds of nutrient rich food with West Oaklanders. Despite this bounty, we still don't have a permanent farm. The three Community Market Farms that we currently tend are on borrowed land. Over the years, we have built up, farmed, and then had to close several other farm sites.
In 2010, City Slicker Farms secured a state grant to build a premiere Urban Farm and Park in West Oakland. While 475 applicants from across California applied for the grant, only 62 were chosen for grant awards. The West Oakland Farm Park was the second highest award in Alameda County.
With the grant, we were able to purchase the future home of our West Oakland Farm Park, 1.4 acres at Helen and Peralta streets.
Why a Campaign to Be Rooted in West Oakland?
To see the Farm Park to completion we have initiated a capital campaign to raise $5 million. To date we have $4.66 million – 93% of our goal. Your gift will help make our West Oakland forever farm and park a reality.
What is the timeline for the West Oakland Farm Park?
- November 2014 to March 2015 - Final Designs and Permitting
- April to June 2015 - Bidding Process and Contracts
- July 2015 - Construction Begins<--- This is where we are now! Construction is well underway!
- Spring 2016 - Construction Completed
- May 2016 - Farm Park opening to the public
- June 11 & 12 2016 - Farm Park Grand Opening Weekend
