Backyard Gardens Program

Building & Growing Together

Through our Backyard Gardens Program, we build raised beds and provide free materials and supplies for members to grow their own food. To support their success, garden members get two years of direct mentorship and a lifetime supply of soil, seeds, and starts.

Individuals & Families

Since 2008, we have worked with individuals and families to build and support garden beds in their backyards and patios. We partner with low or fixed income households interested in growing their own food to build garden beds and provide supplies at-no-cost to participants. Based upon a soil analysis conducted by our staff and what the household wants to grow, we make a garden plan and plant the beds together.

Housing & Service Providers

We partner with community groups and organizations such as Satellite Affordable Housing Associates (SAHA) and First 5 childcare centers to create gardens with and for their communities. For our seniors, we work together to plan and plant the gardens, focusing on community-building. For our littler gardeners, we also provide curriculum for educators to help them learn and love their gardens and the delicious food it grows.

Farm Park Community Garden

The community garden at the West Oakland Farm Park consists of 28 irrigated plots. Gardeners can take advantage of the all the supplies and support at the Farm Park, including free soil, starts, trainings and workshops. At this time, the community garden and waitlist are full.
