#EastBayGives on May 3: Working Together to Build Healthier Communities

Working together to build healthier communities

In June, City Slicker Farms opens our newest site: The West Oakland Farm Park. It will be a green oasis in the heart of the city where our neighbors can bring their kids to play. A space for growing fresh, chemical-free produce with our community. And a hub for urban farming education.

It will also be a space for fruitful collaboration with the many other people and groups doing vital work to support our communities. On May 3, City Slicker Farms and some of the food, social justice, and arts organizations we are partnering with (read on) are all participating in a 24-hour day of giving, #EastBayGives. It’s a community-powered giving day, and a chance to support over 500 awesome organizations working to strengthen our communities in the East Bay.

Please be a part of East Bay Gives. Creative partnerships like these just wouldn’t be possible without the support of our community:

18 Reasons

City Slicker Farms offers affordable fresh produce to our community and teaches people how to grow their own food. This summer, we're teaming up with 18 Reasons, a community cooking school, to offer cooking classes at our new Farm Park. Through their Cooking Matters classes, 18 Reasons will empower low-income community members to cook healthy, nutritious meals on a budget.

The Crucible

When it opens next month, the West Oakland Farm Park will serve as a home for education and community building in West Oakland. One of the partnerships that helped bring the Farm Park to life was with The Crucible, a one-of-a-kind industrial arts school here in West Oakland. A group of apprentices from The Crucible built us this amazing art gate, which is one of the last structures we’ll install at the Farm Park.

This is an inspiring video about the project.

New Roots, a program of the International Rescue Committee

Every summer, through our Youth Crew program, City Slicker Farms empowers West Oakland youth to farm in the city, gain leadership skills and engage with social justice issues in their communities. This summer, we’re excited to be partnering with New Roots, an International Rescue Committee (IRC) program that helps refugees reestablish their ties to the land and nourish themselves through growing food. Together, City Slicker Farms and IRC will hold peer-learning sessions for our staff and youth programs, sharing knowledge to build a healthier, more just food system.

City Slicker Farms, 18 Reasons, The Crucible, the International Rescue Committee and so many other great organizations will be participating in East Bay Gives on Tuesday, May 3.
