City Slicker Farms

Our innovative yearlong apprenticeship is based on a traditional rural agricultural apprenticeship. Each year we bring on 3 to 4 Urban Farm Apprentices who receive intensive urban agriculture training and are given leadership roles in our programs.  Apprentices work with City Slicker Farms for at least one year, and receive free housing in West Oakland along with a monthly living stipend.  An additional housing stipend is available in lieu of housing for current West Oakland residents.

Urban Farm Apprentices work in all areas of our programs, including farming (planning, obtaining supplies, propagating, planting, harvesting, etc.), volunteer management, farm-stand sales, community outreach, event planning, building backyard gardens, technical assistance for community members, administrative work, and record-keeping.  We tailor the experience to our apprentices' learning needs as much as possible.  

We generally hire apprentices in October or November for the following year.  When we are hiring we post announcements on this site and also make an announcement via our e-mail newsletter, which you can sign up for on our homepage.
