Dreaming up a Playground: Kids Design the Farm Park's First Feature
KaBOOM! Playground Build Day on August 20, 2015 is approaching fast, and we're busy getting the West Oakland Urban Farm and Park ready (as you may have noticed if you've passed it recently). We couldn't be more excited to partner with KaBOOM! and PG&E to bring West Oakland kids' dream playground to life! Last month, at the Willy Keyes Recreation Center a few blocks from the Farm Park, we hosted a Design Day for local youth to draw their ideas for a perfect playground.
Supplied with markers, crayons, colored pencils, and plenty of tasty snacks, the kids came up with some original ideas: a whale to slide down, a working cannon, a salad truck, and a trampoline. After the drawing session was done, the Farm Park Council went through the designs and looked at the most popular elements.
Those elements became part of the final KaBOOM! playground design. The playground will feature an obstacle course-like setup, with spinning monkey bars, a climbing wall, a slide, and swings. Perhaps most fitting of all, many of the drawings featured a garden, which of course made our staff happy to see! The playground will not only be next to the largest garden City Slicker Farms has built to date, but the fruit tree orchard will actually be incorporated into the playground area so that kids can play amongst a food forest.
