Backyard Gardeners Take a Field Trip to Soul Flower Farm
On April 17, Backyard Gardeners and Mentors attended a unique City Slicker Farms field trip: a tour of Soul Flower Farm in El Sobrante. Backyard Gardener Njelela Kwamilele, who is a fan of Soul Flower Farm, suggested the trip to Garden Program Manager Alison Fischman, and the two worked together to organize it.

The Backyard Gardeners learned about permaculture and biodynamic farming practices from Maya, who runs Soul Flower Farm with her husband and two sons. They checked out brightly colored beehives, an aquaponics system, a beautiful orchard with dozens of fruit trees and grapevines, and watched goats, chickens, ducks, and cows munch on kale stems donated from a local kale chip company. They even got to taste some of Soul Flower Farm's very own and very tasty honey! The City Slicker Farms staff was so jealous of the field trip that we set up our own staff visit the following week!
