The Helen Turner Children’s Center Garden Project: A Picture Book
In early October, Childcare Garden Program Coordinator Sarah Karlson and a very enthusiastic group of staff, children, and parents worked together to build a garden for Helen Turner Children's Center in Hayward. This garden was specifically designed to be accessible by children in wheelchairs. In just four hours, the group assembled boxes, strung trellises, shoveled soil, planted seedlings and installed irrigation. At the end of the day this beautiful garden was finished!

After the build, Sarah received a wonderful picture book that the school put together documenting the experience from the day of the build to a celebratory meal after their first harvest.
Sarah helped the teachers and students realize their dream of building a garden, enabling them to “grow beautiful vegetables that everyone could share.” The parents and children had a blast learning about garden construction and caring for plants.

Families got to taste the fruits of their labor when Helen Turner teachers cooked up their homegrown bok choy, swiss chard, mustard greens, and collard greens. As the book illustrates, “children said that the vegetables tasted ‘good,’ ‘spicy,’ ‘fresh,’ and ‘yummy.’” Helen Turner Children's Center is already looking forward to the harvests yet to come.
